 LETTER TO U.P.U.
NEW YORK

Mr. P. Onoriode
Chairman, Education Committee
Urhobo Progress Union
P.O. Box 523, Cathedral, Station
New York, NY. 10025
U.S.A.

Dear Mr. Onoriode

Thank you for your letter dated April 26th, 1998. We are very much delighted and pleased for the interest shown by the Urhobo Progress Union of Nigeria in New York, U.S.A.

As a University, it is our duty to project the intellectual and academic content of the cultures around us, and since we are situated geographically in the centre of Urhobo land, we have situated geographically in the centre of Urhobo land, we have seen it as part of our responsibilities in to instal Urhobo studies programme as part of our academic responsibilities in this region.

I am glad to inform you that I set up a committee which has come up with a Degree Programme in Urhobo Studies in the University. I am enclosing what we regard as the minimal annual budget for that programme, which stands at about N3 million. The University, however, has a policy that for this kind of programme we would like to have an Endowment Fund for at least two professorial chairs, and the minimum endowment fund will be N2 million per professional chair. The essence of the endowment fund is that the money is paid into a bank, and the interest from this fund is used for providing for the up-keep of the two professors.

In the budget we have also provided for office equipment such as photocopying machines, duplicating machines, file cabinets, typewriters and computers. It would be appreciated if all , or some of these items are sent to us in kind. It will save a lot of costs.

We have worked on the programming of this exercise and it is our hope that we can start-off by October 1, 1998, which is relatively a short time from now. But it all depends on the funding expected for the programme.

We look forward to hearing from you and we certainly wish you the best of luck in this very laudable project that you have embarked upon.

Yours sincerely,

Professor P.O. Sada (JP)
Vice-Chancellor
