Subject: Re: STAR LETTER: Ekeh's : ''WHAT NIGERIA IS DOING IN THE DELTA IS WRONG''

Netters:

I sympathize with the pro-Delta sentiments expressed in Professor Ekeh's letter below. The letter would, howver, have been balaced if only Ekeh showed a certain degree of concern for those who have been murdered by the marauders from that region. The killings of 12 police officers in separate batches happened to be the latest diabolical design of the delta thugs. In Ondo State alone, about 100 people lost their lives in the hands of those thugs. As it has been reported, these thugs are being sponsored judging by their equipment, organization, and preparation.

The unfortunate truth is that the situation is now a law and order issue. Luckily, that will be temporary, and whatever substantial issues are still there- not yet undermined by the uncontrolled massive killings by the delta thugs- can then be addressed. The current situation was easily predictable. It was one wave of killings after another. Within the past couple of months, the bastards were in Ondo State twice killing men, women and children and burning houses. No particular targets; they just wanted to smell and drink blood. And, yes, they had gallons and gallons of blood flowing. Notwithstanding the degree of injustice that one alleges, there ought to be certain limits to one's savagery against one's fellow human beings. Those delta thugs and their sponsors know no limits.

The Obasanjo government has done much more than any previous government to have this case resolved. He has personally visited the area. Indeed, he, distastefully in my view, had a conversation with the actual thugs causing the mayhem. He was trying to placate them. At the time, another wave of killings had just taken place two weeks before. The Ondo State governor sent emissaries to talk things over- after the first wave of killings of Ondo State people by these dimwits. Two meetings after that, all to no avail. Their blood thirst had to be satisfied. Yet they and their sponsors did not have the sense to know that the new democratic dispensation would require that states get together and push bills in their common interest.

Crocodile tears everywhere. What were all the petitioners doing when these delta thugs were marauding and killing as far away as over 200 miles from their base? Who are the old bastards providing the financial and organizational support? 12 officers dead! In two batches! They wanted their dastardly message heard. By the federal government. As for Ondo State people, the wounds are all over us. We heard the message a long, long time ago, and nobody is talking about any injustice done to us.
