High Recognition by Fisheries
Society of Nigeria
With Its 2001 Corporate Award of Excellence for
Mrs.
Victoria Oti
Akpobome's
Votia Fish Farm, Kokori, in
Urhoboland
Nigeria's Niger Delta is a region where
fishes were once abundant. With the oil pollution that has done a good
amount of injuries to the region's environment, fishes have become
scarcer. Fish farming is now one way of redeeming the fish
population that is natural to the region. However, fish farming is a
tough business. Many businessmen in the Niger Delta and elsewhere in
Nigeria have attempted it, with limited success.
The Fisheries Society of Nigeria is an influential association of
professionals who seek to promote good practices and results in fish
farming. It selected for its 2001
Corporate
Award of Excellence a major fish farmer in the Niger Delta. Victoria
Oti Akpobome, who began fish farming as a hobby in her native hometown
of Kokori in the Urhobo heartland more than ten years ago, has expanded
her operations into a major enterprise, employing many people from her
beloved hometown in a business that has enriched Kokori and the Niger
Delta. We salute Mrs. Victoria Oti Akpobome for receiving this high
award from the Fisheries Society of Nigeria. The plaque and certificate
of the award as well as the associated letters of recognition are as
